Ten tents on the rim of a canyon

A small camp on a sandstone mesa in southern Utah, with real beds, wood stoves, dinner at one long table and a night sky most people have never seen.

Tent seven, eight o’clock

You pull in at four. By eight the lanterns are lit, the canyon turns blue and the first stars come up over the far rim.

We built Far Mesa for people who want the desert without roughing it. Ten canvas tents with real beds, one dining house, a hot tub that faces west and 640 acres of quiet around all of it.

A day out here

  1. First light

Coffee on the deck while the mist burns off the canyon floor.

  2. Slot canyon walk

A guide, two and a half hours and walls so close you can touch both.

  3. Down to the river

A slow float on the river 900 feet below camp, with lunch on a sandbar.

  4. The long table

Dinner for the whole camp, most of it cooked over juniper coals.

  5. Lights out

Camp goes dark at ten so the Milky Way can come up over the rim.

Guests, after one night

A few words from people who stayed with us this year.

  • We came for two nights and booked a third at breakfast. The tent was warmer than our house.
    Megan T., Denver
  • The slot canyon walk was the best two hours of our trip, and we saw three national parks that week.
    Luis and Ana R., Austin
  • Dinner at the long table felt like a party with people you just met and already like. Then the stars came out.
    Priya S., Seattle
